How to get a shore based role with zero industry experience
Brokerages do not hire qualifications, they hire judgement and reliability. Here is how to prove both when your CV has never touched a yacht.

The industry looks closed from the outside. It is not closed, it is undocumented. There is no graduate scheme, no standard route and no shortage of people telling you that you need to know someone.
What a brokerage is actually assessing
Strip away the yachting language and a charter brokerage is looking for four things:
- Can you hold a conversation with a wealthy client without being either intimidated or overfamiliar?
- Can you keep track of details across a dozen moving parts without dropping any?
- Can you write clearly?
- Will you still be here in two years?
Notice that none of those require a maritime background. They require a working week of evidence.
Translating what you already have
Hospitality is dealing with difficult requests at short notice. Sales is managing a pipeline and hearing no repeatedly. Operations is coordinating suppliers who do not answer emails. Any of those maps directly onto charter brokerage.
The mistake is describing your job, rather than the capability underneath it. "Managed the front desk" says nothing. "Handled 40 guest requests a day, including complaints escalated from three departments" says a great deal.
Approaching brokerages
- Research the brokerage before you write, even for ten minutes
- Reference something specific about how they work
- Say clearly what you are asking for: a conversation, not a job
- Keep it under 150 words
- Follow up once, politely, two weeks later
Hiring managers reply to people who clearly did their homework. They ignore circulars.
What to do this month
Pick ten brokerages from a serious shortlist, not the first ten search results. Learn something real about each. Write to one person at each. Then do it again thirty days later with the confidence of practice.
